Description
Selenium is a trace element that is required for the production of the antioxidant enzyme Glutathione perioxidase (Glutathione Peroxidase), an important antioxidant enzyme that prevents the oxidation of lipids, particularly harmful cholesterol (LDL). In its natural state, selenium is connected to the sulphur amino acid methionine, which is found in food. Selenium is found in a variety of important proteins known as selenoproteins that are found throughout the body. Because selenium proteins are involved in the creation of testosterone, a hormone that regulates both normal and pathological growth, they may lessen the risk of prostate cancer. These proteins also aid in thyroi regulation.
